all you need now is to: just add confetti

Alison from Just Add Confetti has been busy adding colour to people’s lives for over twelve years as an Art Director. I thought it’d be great to introduce you to the woman behind all of my little party australia’s event stationery. I am always impressed with the work Alison produces, it’s fun, colourful, stylish and unique. In addition to being incredibly talented, Alison is kind, generous, gracious and enthusiastic, which I am sure you will discover as the interview unfolds.

Alison! Thanks so much for your time today – it seems like you always have a fun project on the go, what is the latest? Thank you so much for this fun interview, Emma! Oh yes, I am currently working away as a little elf planning a festive, little Christmas party as we speak!

Wow! That sounds so exciting! I can just imagine you with a little elf hat! Now, lets start from the beginning. Why did you decide to become a graphic designer? Well I have always loved art. In high school, I took wonderful fine art classes but we didn’t really have access to graphic design facilities. In college, I started my freshmen year as an art major taking all fine art classes. Then, at the beginning of sophomore year, I took my first graphic design class. I totally fell in love with it! And the rest is history! I graduated with a major of Advertising Design and worked the next 10 years in advertising agencies as an Art Director. I created print ads, digital ads, commercials, collateral pieces and a bunch of other design pieces along the way. I loved corporate advertising, but there was always a part of me that really gravitated to parties…invitations, event signage, custom decor, etc. I began designing invitations and party decor in the evenings and on weekends for many years, while I also worked as an Art Director. Then a little over two years ago, I resigned from my day job to truly follow my passions with Just Add Confetti. Most recently, I love sharing my imaginative events, creative entertaining ideas, and graphic design printables on my Just Add Confetti blog. I have met so many incredible people through the blog and social media (like you, Emma! 🙂 ) It has been a true blessing.

You are so wonderful Alison! I am so pleased we met, became friends and can work so regularly together on such fun projects. Tell me, how long have you been designing professionally? I’ve been a graphic designer professionally for over 12 years now. Wow! That makes me feel really old! haha!

haha too funny! Not old, just experienced. I love hearing that your career has given opportunities to work on such various projects. What is your most favourite project? Oh my goodness, I have so many favorites!! haha! I have always loved the idea of being a part of (in even the smallest way) someone’s most treasured event. A wedding. A baby shower. A child’s first birthday. To me, these celebrations are what life is all about. I think that it is an incredible honor if I can use any talents that I may have to help people celebrate these special times in their lives.

That is so lovely! What do you do for fun?  When I’m not behind the computer designing, I am chasing my two active boys (ages 5 and 2) around the local parks and playgrounds. They forever keep me on my toes and I love them with all my heart. Also, I am married to my college sweetheart, Scott. He is my best friend and supports and encourages all of my (crazy) dreams. My family means absolutely everything to me.

Family is so important. Can you tell me what is your best achievement as a graphic designer or party planner? I am fortunate to have had my work featured on The Knot, Kara’s Party Ideas and Catch My Party. Also, I have had the wonderful opportunity to have worked with many amazing brands such as Oriental Trading, Cardstore (a sub-division of American Greetings) and Minted, just to name a few.

Tell me, is there a designer or party planner you admire most, and why? Oh my goodness, there are so many designers and party planners that I admire. They all inspire me so much. Whenever I have a free second, I just love scrolling through Instagram to see all of the projects that everyone is working on. I think positivity is so contagious. I am a huge supporter of the “collaboration over competition” movement. We all have so many different and distinct talents. If we join forces, imagine the power and creativity that would be generated. It’s exciting!!

That is exciting! Your positivity and enthusiasm for creativity is infectious! Where do you find your inspiration? Honestly…everywhere! I find so much inspiration from my kids, from a conversation with my mom, from a stroll through a local bookstore or card store! I think you can soak in creativity anywhere. You just have to look for it!

Absolutely! Do you have a signature element you enjoy designing for parties? I don’t know if it’s a signature element, but I love to add unexpected, whimsical elements to my designs and parties.

What is your secret? I have no secrets…haha! Work hard. Never give up. Always keep learning. Give more than you take, always!

That is fabulous! What would be your advice to those wanting to create event stationery for their own childs party? Go for it! Remember, everything does not have to be perfect. Also work on art/craft/design projects with your kids. Your kids will never remember “the perfect;” they will remember the experience and quality time spent with you making a fun memory.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I loved hearing your answersThank you SO much Emma! This was so fun!!

I would also like to make a special mention of your recent hard work towards Jack’s Lemonade Stand raising money for LIFEkids at C3 The Bukit, Bali. We are so grateful for you donating all the printables, but most importantly all the time you invested creating all the incredible designs. Thank you Alison!
